What is Ionisation?

There are two types of ions, namely positive ion and negative ion. All physical matters are constructed by molecules, where electrons are moving around a proton. In this way, a balanced condition is occurred and this balanced condition helps to stabilize the molecule. There is constant difference in electrons and protons in each molecule, if somehow this difference is changed then the molecule turned into an ion. In very simple words, ionisation means converting a neutral molecule into a charged ion. Suppose, there is a neutral molecule. The electrons are bound with a proton by a potential energy. Now, if any of those electrons receive additional energy from another source, which is sufficient to break the potential barrier, then the electron or electrons will escape from the outer surface of the molecule. In this way, the electrons are freed from that molecule, and automatically the molecules turns into a positively charged ion. This is the basic principle of ionisation process.

Otherwise, if an electron collides with a neutral molecule, then it become trapped within the molecule, and start moving by centering the proton. In this way, the electron releases energy and the molecule turns into negative ion. Ionisation process is sometime intentional, where high accelerated photons are applied into the surface of a metal. And the free electrons of the metal are released from the surface. Sometime ionised or charged particles are required for several applications. Positively charged ions are required for many purposes like ion thruster in power crafts. There are different types of ionisation like sequel ionisation, non sequel ionisation, tunnel ionisation and quantum ionisation. Each of them are derived from classical ionisation process and have applications as per the condition or situation.
